determine. Following two further episodes of antepartum haemorrhage, magnetic resonance imaging was carried out at 34 weeks gestation. Sagittal and coronal sections were obtained on a Picker MRI system using T1 weighted pulse sequences (sagittal TR 300 ms, TE 30 ms, coronal TR 500 ms, TE 26 ms). Figure 1 demonstrates the normal placenta on the posterior uterine wall, terminating just over 1 cm from the internal os. A succenturiate lobe lies on the anterior wall terminating 3.5cm from the os. Blood vessels are clearly seen between these, lying between the foetal head and the os. After several further minor episodes of bleeding, an ultrasound study at 36 weeks confirmed the finding of fluid filled structures (blood vessels) between the foetal head and the os. Detailed visualisation of the placental relationship to the internal os again proved difficult. At 36.4 weeks, a healthy boy of 2.5 kg was delivered by emergency lower section Caesarian Section. The MRI findings were confirmed at operation.

A Case of Ovarian Pregnancy Diagnosed by MRI

Ovarian pregnancy is a rare form of ectopic pregnancy, causing a great diagnostic challenge. We report a case of ovarian pregnancy in a 42-year-old woman, in whom MRI successfully demonstrated the implantation in the ovary. Transvaginal ultrasonography showed an echogenic mass in the right ovary but failed to demonstrate tubal pregnancy. T2-weighted MR images disclosed a gestational sac structu...

Fetal MRI in the pre-operative diagnosis and assessment of secondary abdominal pregnancy: a rare sequela of a previous caesarean section.

Secondary abdominal pregnancy is a rare type of ectopic pregnancy. Following fertilization, the blastocyst escapes from the uterine cavity and implants in the peritoneal cavity. The early antenatal diagnosis and identification of the site and extent of placental implantation in an abdominal pregnancy are important to prepare for the eventual surgery. We present the case of a ...

Imaging for acute pelvic pain in pregnancy

Acute pelvic pain in pregnancy presents diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. Standard imaging techniques need to be adapted to reduce harm to the foetus from X-rays because of their teratogenic and carcinogenic potential. Ultrasound remains the primary imaging investigation of the pregnant abdomen. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to be useful in the diagnosis of gynaecological...
